Lyric Evaluation

I’m actually really surprised that I haven’t talked more about music, because I LOVE music. You know the saying that “Music soothes the savage beast’s soul,” well that may be true, but it also soothes my soul. For me, I’m more than a little bit country (my mom and dad’s influence), I’m a little bit of a rat pack (my dad’s influence), I’m a little bit contemporary Christian/praise & worship (my mom’s influence & me), a little bit hip hop (me), a little bit rock and roll (me) and a lot broadway show tunes/Disney musical (ME). The song I’ve chosen has really become an emblem in my life. It’s from Wicked, which is the first show that I ever say at the Fabulous Fox Theater. One of my really good friends, Jordan actually introduced me to this song and whenever I’m down, whenever I feel like giving up or when I just need to pull myself up by my bootstraps, I crank this song all the way up and sing along to every word. Oh, if I mess up a word, I have to start the song over again.

Here it is: Defying Gravity!

(spoken) Elphaba – why couldn’t you have just stayed calm for once, instead of flying off the handle!
(sung) I hope you’re happy!
I hope you’re happy now
I hope you’re happy how you
Hurt your cause forever
I hope you think you’re clever!

I hope you’re happy
I hope you’re happy, too
I hope you’re proud how you
Would grovel in submission
To feed your own ambition

So though I can’t imagine how
I hope you’re happy right now

(spoken) Elphie, listen to me. Just say you’re sorry:
(sung) You can still be with the Wizard
What you’ve worked and waited for
You can have all you ever wanted:

(spoken) I know:
(sung) But I don’t want it –
No – I can’t want it

Something has changed within me
Something is not the same
I’m through with playing by the rules
Of someone else’s game
Too late for second-guessing
Too late to go back to sleep
It’s time to trust my instincts
Close my eyes and leap!

It’s time to try
Defying gravity
I think I’ll try
Defying gravity
And you can’t pull me down!

Can’t I make you understand?
You’re having delusions of grandeur:

I’m through accepting limits
’cause someone says they’re so
Some things I cannot change
But till I try, I’ll never know!
Too long I’ve been afraid of
Losing love I guess I’ve lost
Well, if that’s love
It comes at much too high a cost!
I’d sooner buy
Defying gravity
Kiss me goodbye
I’m defying gravity
And you can’t pull me down:
(spoken) Glinda, come with me. Think of what we could
do, together.

(sung) Unlimited
Together we’re unlimited
Together we’ll be the greatest team
There’s ever been
Glinda –
Dreams, the way we planned ’em

If we work in tandem:

There’s no fight we cannot win
Just you and I
Defying gravity
With you and I
Defying gravity

They’ll never bring us down!
(spoken) Well? Are you coming?

I hope you’re happy
Now that you’re choosing this

(spoken) You too
(sung) I hope it brings you bliss

I really hope you get it
And you don’t live to regret it
I hope you’re happy in the end
I hope you’re happy, my friend:

So if you care to find me
Look to the western sky!
As someone told me lately:
“Ev’ryone deserves the chance to fly!”
And if I’m flying solo
At least I’m flying free
To those who’d ground me
Take a message back from me
Tell them how I am
Defying gravity
I’m flying high
Defying gravity
And soon I’ll match them in renown!
And nobody in all of Oz
No Wizard that there is or was
Is ever gonna bring me down!

I hope you’re happy!

Look at her, she’s wicked!
Get her!

Bring me down!

No one mourns the wicked
So we’ve got to bring her

So, this song is soo powerful to me, especially when she is talking about how something has changed in her and that she’s not the same person anymore. I can totally relate that truth. Elphaba goes on to say that she’s tired of playing by the rules of someone else’s games, and she goes on to say that she’s through accepting the limits that people have put upon her. She’s ready to conquer her fears and embrace her own chance to spread her own wings and fly. That’s exactly where my life is right now. I finally got tired of limiting myself. I got tired of not fully living life because I was scared. So, on February 3, 2014 I began making the changes in my life so I could finally unchained myself from my fears, close my eyes and take that leap. It’s been 80 days since I started my weightless journey and I’ve lost 46 lbs! I’ve also eaten broccoli, spinach, zucchini, squash, cauliflower, and peppers, all vegetables that I refused to touch. I finally got my own Galinda who believes in this process and is my major cheerleader. She’s my beach body coach, Laura Mendenhall, and between Beachbody, shakeology, starting to walk again (I’m up to 2 miles) and working out at home, I feel better that I ever have. All because of the positive, encouraging mood and anthem that this song has been in my life. I’m living proof that when you push the obstacles out-of-the-way and stomp out the excuses … you can defy gravity as well!
